AI, short for Artificial Intelligence, refers to the development and deployment of computer systems or machines that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence. AI encompasses various techniques and approaches aimed at enabling machines to simulate human cognitive processes, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding.

AI can be broadly classified into two categories: Narrow AI and General AI.

  1. Narrow AI (also known as Weak AI): Narrow AI systems are designed to perform specific tasks or a set of tasks with a level of intelligence that may surpass human performance in those specific domains. Examples of narrow AI include virtual personal assistants (e.g., Siri, Alexa), recommendation systems, image recognition systems, and autonomous vehicles. These systems operate within well-defined boundaries and excel in their particular area of expertise but lack a comprehensive understanding or general intelligence.
  2. General AI (also known as Strong AI): General AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that possess the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across multiple domains, similar to human intelligence. General AI would have the capacity to perform any intellectual task that a human being can do. However, the development of such systems is still largely hypothetical, and currently, we only have narrow AI applications.

AI systems can be built using various techniques, including machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. Machine learning, a subset of AI, focuses on creating algorithms and models that allow computers to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed. Deep learning, a branch of machine learning, utilizes artificial neural networks with multiple layers to process vast amounts of data and extract meaningful patterns.

AI has a wide range of applications across industries, including healthcare, finance, transportation, entertainment, and more. It has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of society, enabling automation, enhancing decision-making processes, improving efficiency, and solving complex problems. However, it also raises important ethical considerations, such as privacy, bias, transparency, and the impact on employment.

Minsky’s work on artificial neural networks laid the foundation for deep learning.

His research has greatly advanced the development of neural networks, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs).
